Past Oilmen of the Year
2024 - Monte Armstrong

Monte grew up on a farm in southeastern Saskatchewan. He graduated from Oxbow High School in 1976. After harvest that fall he moved to City of Lloydminster to find work.
He was hired by Ron Denney at Weldex Machine and worked as a laborer in the welding shop and on maintenance crews, eventually becoming a foreman and then supervisor. The Weldex group bought G & W Oilfield Hauling in 1978 and the field construction department of Weldex joined G & W. Shortly after, the construction portion then became Midway Oilfield Services, supplying maintenance crews, portable welders, trucking and backhoes, employing upwards of 60 employees.
In 1982 when interest rates were high and there was a downturn in the oil industry, some of the equipment was purchased from the receivership of Midway Oilfield Services and Clancy’s Oilfield Services was started. Monte worked as a crew foreman and supervisor/part owner.
Then in 1987, when the industry had slowed down again, Monte, along with Blair Denney and their wives, Chris and Linda, started GRANITE OILFIELD SERVICES INC. They continued operating crews and worked with other contractors to provide pipefitting, welding, trucking and skid steer services. Granite Oilfield also continued as the custodians for Area R1 Oil Spill Co-op for many years. This meant being on call 24 hours a day in the event of an oil spill on water.
In 2010 they sold Granite Oilfield Services and Monte retired after almost 34 years in the oil industry.
Monte and Chris were married in 1981. They have 4 children and 3 grandchildren. They like to spend time at the lake, travel, golf and still throw the occasional curling rock.
Monte has dedicated countless hours to the community, including:
● Lloydminster Oilmen’s Bonspiel Committee member for over 40 years
